Why a government?

Ask yourself a simple question: Why have a government?

So, where do you start with that answer? That should start you thinking of what government should be, how it should look and generate other questions: How should a government serve and represent you? Do you want a government made up of representatives from everyday life?  Should it do what the majority always wants it to do?  Do you want one person making decisions for the entire country?  A King or Queen?  What's should government be doing?  Should they create a general set of rights and then institute systems to ensure those rights are shared equally?  Or should the more influential people be able to write and apply the law?  How does the government run?  Is it just the most powerful people putting together a group and governing according to their interests?  Or is it a government that checks the interests of the powerful so that we all benefit?  If it's the latter... how do you fund it?  Who pays?  How does the government get power?

Obviously we all (see YOU) have a huge stake in this.  We must have realistic expectations of what our government can and can't do.  And citizens must understand that government plays a huge role in the quality of life for its participants.
